Description
For over three decades, Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre has communicated the powerful resonance of dance in Plains Indian Society, as well as the importance of songs as living history and oral tradition. Cokata Upo!, translated as Come to the Center, celebrates the culture of the Lakota people through traditional and sacred stories, songs, and dances. Narratives and creation stories are woven into the fabric of the performance, which is set against a backdrop of spectacular video imagery and accompanied by live traditional, sacred, and courting songs. Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre began with the support of traditional Lakota Indian educators, healers, community leaders, championship powwow dancers, singers, and storytellers. Founded in 1978 on the Rosebud Reservation, South Dakota, the company includes some of the most highly acclaimed performers of the Sioux Nation.
