Scholarships Available To High School Seniors

City Water, Light and Power (CWLP) and other Illinois Municipal Utilities Association (IMUA) member utilities, in partnership, are offering a scholarship program to eligible high school seniors for four $1,000 awards. Eligible students are asked to submit an application and an essay of 500 words or less addressing their choice of one of four utility-related questions. Applicants must be high school seniors whose parents or legal guardians are residential customers of CWLP or another IMUA-member utility. This will be the 21st year IMUA has offered the program in cooperation with its member utilities.

“Energy and water providers are in a constant cycle of addressing any number of economic and regulatory challenges in order to provide services to customers,” said CWLP Chief Utility Engineer Doug Brown. “Building a greater awareness among students of these issues is a good practice to prepare them to seek out solutions for what they may have to face in their own careers.”

Since it began, the program has awarded more than $47,000 to 88 students from 29 different IMUA member communities statewide. The purpose of the program is to promote and recognize scholastic achievement, as well as to create greater awareness among young adults of the many issues facing municipally-owned and operated utilities.

The deadline for submitting applications and essays is Friday, March 12, 2021. A committee of municipal utility officials will select a total of four finalists, each of whom will receive a certificate and a $1,000 scholarship award.  Winners will be announced in April.
Application packets are available online, and more information about the scholarship program is available here.
