Springfield, IL – Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) is announcing the release of a new smartphone app aimed at better serving their Access paratransit service customers.
Access is an on-demand service, which provides door-to-door service and must be scheduled in advance. The new Access Sangamon app provides users a way to schedule their pickups without having to call SMTD to schedule rides.
Access paratransit users must be approved to use the service, which is complimentary Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) service. To qualify, an applicant must be an individual with disability who is unable, as the result of a physical or mental impairment, and without the assistance of another individual, to board or disembark from any vehicle on the SMTD fixed-line system, which is readily accessible, or be an individual with a disability who cannot travel to or from an SMTD bus stop.
“We are excited to offer the new Access Sangamon app to our paratransit users,” said Steve Schoeffel, SMTD’s Deputy Managing Director. “Providing a tool to schedule rides more easily and outside of regular business hours without having to leave a message is a big step forward.”
SMTD’s Access paratransit service provides around seven thousand rides per month, and a “soft launch” several weeks ago allowed staff to work through a few bugs before presenting the new app to the entire community.
“Smartphones have become the norm for many of our ADA passengers, and taking advantage of the technology now available should benefit both our passengers and our staff,” Schoeffel said. “Paratransit service is growing at SMTD similarly to what we’re seeing across the county. As our workforce ages and retires, there is more and more demand on our paratransit services, and the national trend is for that to continue. The convenience of using the app for scheduling should also help offset some of the increased volume we expect our dispatchers to continue to see.”
To use the new app, users should download Access Sangamon from Google Play or the Apple Store, and call SMTD Access at 217-522-8594 to get registered to use the app. More information on Access paratransit services and SMTD are available at SMTD.org.
