On Monday, June 2, the City of Springfield hosted a special promotional ceremony at the Firefighters Lake Club to recognize new leadership within the Springfield Fire and Police Departments.

Assistant Fire Chief Nicholas Zummo was officially promoted to Fire Chief, succeeding Chief Edward Canny, who retired in May after years of dedicated service. Captain Julie Plunk was promoted to the position of Assistant Fire Chief, making history as the highest-ranking female officer in department history.

In the Springfield Police Department, Assistant Chief Joseph Behl was promoted to Police Chief, replacing Chief Kenneth Scarlette, who also retired at the end of May following a distinguished career in law enforcement.  Commander Ryan Leach was also officially promoted to Assistant Police Chief.

Mayor Misty Buscher addressed the crowd of family members, fellow first responders, and community leaders in attendance, commending the newly appointed chiefs for their long-standing service and commitment to public safety.

“Each of these individuals has dedicated their careers to protecting and serving the Springfield community,” said Mayor Buscher. “They have earned the respect of their peers and the trust of our residents. I have full confidence in their leadership and know they will continue to serve our city with integrity, professionalism, and heart.”

The City extends gratitude to Chief Edward Canny and Chief Kenneth Scarlette for their decades of leadership and service, and congratulates all newly promoted personnel as they begin the next chapter in their public service careers.
