The primary duties of the Area Water Business Group Manager include responsibility for the operations of the water business group in Illinois/Indiana including business development, staff recruiting and development, project delivery, profitability, workload management, staff mentoring and support, and quality control. The Area Water Group provides drinking water, wastewater, water resource management, communications and public involvement, planning, environmental, and construction management services to municipal, state, and federal agencies and private clients across Illinois/Indiana.
- Develop and implement client engagement and client management planning, with Water Business Group leadership, to define and drive strategies for clients within the geographic Area.
- Manages, supervises, and mentors staff, provides technical direction and services, staff administration, overseeing quality of deliverables, manages projects, and marketing and positioning HDR for strategic client and project pursuits.
- Engage Market Sector/Business Class leadership staff in the development and execution of key market sector initiatives, tailored to the Illinois/Indiana geography, during strategic planning and annual alignment meetings.
- Function as a senior project manager on select projects in addition to management responsibilities, and also be administratively responsible for the group’s staff and technical service functions, subsequently leading and coordinating services across service lines with other sections.
- Prepare annual revenue forecasts and budgets, monitors performance of the business group, and sells and wins projects that match the interests and skill sets of the staff.
- Recruit, Select, train, develop and manage water personnel. Experience in the management and development of multi-discipline teams will be required.
- Work cooperatively with Regional and National Directors and coordinate services with other business lines in the company.
Preferred Qualifications
- Illinois or Indiana PE preferred.
- History of successful leadership of major BD campaigns and understanding of the framework and tools used to understand our client’s needs and develop winning strategies, and marketing materials.
- Demonstrated success in cultivating client relationships to win pursuits and execute projects, especially in the local markets
- Success in initiating and managing growth.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Self-motivated requiring minimal oversight.
- Well organized with multi-tasking skills.
- Able to work under and meet tight deadlines.
- Well-developed analytical and organizational skills.
- Document control experience (ProjectWise a plus). MS in Engineering, Planning or related field preferred.
- Prior consulting experience preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive experience preferred.
- Local candidates are preferred.

- Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
- A minimum of 10 years experience
- Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
- Demonstrated experience with leading diverse teams
- Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
- Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand
- Ability to work cooperatively with regional and local office managers, other area business group directors, technical directors and marketing managers
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
