Route 66 enthusiasts, food lovers, and adventure seekers are invited to witness one of America's most famous food challenges when The Big Texan Steak Ranch® 72oz Steak Challenge Road Show arrives in Springfield on Tuesday, June 23.
The event will take place at the Illinois Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, with a live stream beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the challenge kicking off at 5:30 p.m. Participants will include Scott Dahl of Visit Springfield and Paul "Rocki" Nawrocki of 98.7 WNNS.
The Springfield stop is part of a larger Route 66 Centennial Caravan journey traveling the entire length of the Mother Road from Santa Monica, California, to Chicago, Illinois, celebrating 100 years of America's most famous highway. Along the way, the caravan is visiting communities, attractions, and landmarks that have helped define Route 66's enduring legacy.
"This event combines two iconic pieces of Americana — Route 66 and The Big Texan Steak Challenge," said Casey Claypool, Executive Director of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway. "As we celebrate the Route 66 Centennial, we're excited to welcome visitors and showcase the fun, nostalgia, and unique experiences that continue to make Route 66 a bucket-list destination for travelers from around the world."
The Big Texan Steak Challenge has become legendary since its launch in Amarillo, Texas, challenging participants to consume a 72-ounce steak along with all the trimmings within one hour. The challenge has become one of the most recognized roadside attractions on Route 66 and remains a symbol of the larger-than-life experiences found along the Mother Road.
The Steak Challenge Road Show is just one of many exciting events taking place in Springfield during the Route 66 Centennial year. Celebrations throughout 2026 continue to highlight the history, culture, music, and communities that have shaped Route 66 over the past century.
Springfield's Route 66 Centennial celebrations will culminate on November 11 with a special evening at Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill, Museum and Entertainment Complex featuring STARSHIP featuring Mickey Thomas. The Route 66 Centennial Celebration begins at 6 p.m. and includes dinner, dessert, late-night appetizers, non-alcoholic beverages, and a live concert performance.
The event serves as a fundraiser supporting the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway's 501(c)(3) mission to preserve and promote Illinois Route 66. Space is limited, and tickets are available here.
