The City of Springfield is inviting residents to take part in two upcoming community events focused on sustainability, environmental awareness, and personal security.
Free Document Shredding Event – “Shred the Risk. Stop the Scams.”
The City of Springfield Public Works Department is partnering with AARP Illinois to host a free document-shredding event aimed at helping residents protect themselves from identity theft.
- Tuesday, April 21, 2026
- 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
- Chamberlain Park (Parking Lot)
319 McCreery Ave., Springfield, IL
Residents can bring sensitive documents to be securely shredded on-site at no cost. There is a limit of five business-size boxes per participant. Pre-registration is encouraged. Participants can register by calling 1-877-926-8300 or visiting: https://events.aarp.org/shredtruckspringfield
For those who may have experienced fraud or suspect a scam, AARP also offers a Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360.
Annual Earth Fair at Union Square Park
Additionally, the City of Springfield, in partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM), will host the Annual 2026 Earth Fair on:

- 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Union Square Park, 500 E. Madison St. Springfield, IL
This free, family-friendly event will feature activities for all ages, including children’s programming, educational exhibits, food trucks, and interactive opportunities to learn about environmental sustainability. The event will also be ASL accessible, ensuring an inclusive experience for all attendees. Residents are encouraged to attend and explore ways to make a positive impact on the environment while enjoying a fun and engaging community celebration.
