SPRINGFIELD, Ill- Following the lessons learned from last year's derecho and a commitment to bolster public safety, the City of Springfield announces the development of the first comprehensive crisis communications plan. This plan is designed to keep the community well-informed and prepared in all emergency scenarios.

Last year's derecho highlighted the critical need for effective communication during emergencies. In response, the City of Springfield has worked diligently to create a robust crisis communications strategy that ensures timely and accurate information reaches our residents when they need it most.
The newly developed crisis communications plan incorporates various channels to disseminate important updates and instructions, including social media platforms, public service announcements, and mobile notifications. Additionally, the City has partnered with local radio stations to provide real-time updates and essential information during emergency situations.

"Our top priority is the safety and well-being of every resident in Springfield," stated Mayor Misty Buscher. “A well-prepared community is a resilient community. The crisis communications plan is designed to provide clear guidance and support during times of uncertainty, ensuring that everyone has the information they need to make informed decisions and stay safe."

The City's partnership with local radio stations will enable swift dissemination of critical information, reaching a broad audience across Springfield and its surrounding areas. These radio updates will provide details on emergency procedures, shelter locations, and other pertinent information to assist residents during emergencies.

"We're proud to collaborate with our local radio stations to enhance our emergency communication capabilities," stated Haley Wilson, Communications Director for the City of Springfield. "By working together, we can ensure that our community remains informed and prepared for any situation."

The City of Springfield encourages all residents to stay informed and prepared by signing up for emergency alerts through the Springfield City website https://www.springfield.il.us/Default.aspx and following official social media channels.
