Springfield, Ill.– City Water, Light and Power has earned the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for its Electric Division’s safe operating practices in 2023. The utility earned the Diamond Award in the category for utilities with 250,000 to 999,000 worker-hours annually along with 13 other utilities at the APPA’s Engineering & Operations Conference this week.
“I am immensely proud of our City Water, Light and Power Electric Division for earning the prestigious Safety Award of Excellence from the American Public Power Association,” said Mayor Misty Buscher. “The work of the CWLP Safety Leadership Council is very well organized and professional and efficient. This is a testament to the many leaders at CWLP who make safety a real priority to protect the men and women who work to serve our community. Congratulations to the entire team for this well-deserved honor."
More than 160 utilities entered the annual Safety Awards for 2023. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker-hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records and overall state of their safety programs and culture during 2023. The incidence rate is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2023, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
“It’s great that our employees’ efforts to adhere to operating practices that not only meet the goals we have for service, but that also ensure a safe work environment is being recognized,” said Doug Brown, CWLP Chief Utility Engineer. “This honor underscores our commitment to prioritize the safety and well-being of our employees as they dedicate themselves to power our community.”
“In our industry, safety has to be top of mind all day every day,” said Scott McKenzie, Chair of APPA’s Engineering and Operations Conference safety track and Senior Director of Member Training & Safety at AMP Inc. “These honored utilities have demonstrated a commitment to safety that runs through every aspect of their organizations.”
