City Water, Light and Power (CWLP) Journeymen and Apprentice Electricians represented the utility at the annual Lineman’s Safety Rodeo, coordinated by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives (AIEC). CWLP’s team competed against 18 other teams from around the state at the event held at Lincoln Land Community College’s Line School facility on September 25th. Line personnel competed in several skills challenges, including an armor rod install, cutout change, hurt man rescue, 40-foot transition climb and transition climbing challenge.
CWLP’s Scott Boehm, Nolan Ernst and Adam Stade competed as a team and earned 1st place in the hurt man rescue and 2nd place in the 40-foot transition climb. In individual events, CWLP’s Keaton McCart won Best Overall, placed 2nd in the armor rod install, and earned 3rd place finishes in both the 40-foot transition climb and hurt man rescue.
While agility, speed, and accuracy were important, the primary focus of judging was on safe work practices. Scores were based on proper execution and completion time, with deductions for mistakes such as slipping when climbing poles, dropping tools, or using incorrect procedures or methods.
