HSHS Medical Group welcomes Michelle Zhang, MD, a general surgeon, to HSHS Medical Group General Surgery-Springfield, 301 N. Eighth St., Fifth Floor, in the HSHS St. John's Hospital Pavilion.
Dr. Zhang specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques. She cares for patients who need hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, appendix surgery or breast surgery, including care for benign breast conditions and breast cancer. Her advanced training in robotic approaches supports faster recovery and improved outcomes.
Dr. Zhang takes time to understand each patient's goals, values and concerns before developing a surgical plan. She believes in clear communication and shared decision-making throughout the surgical journey, from the initial consultation through recovery. Her focus is helping patients return to the activities that matter most to them.
Dr. Zhang earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago, and her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in biology from Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her general surgery residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where she also conducted extensive research in surgical oncology. She is board eligible in general surgery and is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Dr. Zhang is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese.
