Springfield, Illinois In a landmark decision, President Joseph R. Biden has formally declared the 1908 Race Riot site a national monument in Springfield, Illinois. This noteworthy proclamation comes as the city commemorates the 116th anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded from August 14-16, 1908. These events marked a crucial juncture in the struggle for civil rights in the United States and catalyzed the establishment of the NAACP.

The United States of America will now hold ownership of the lands encompassing the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument, with management entrusted to the National Park Service. This acknowledgment emphasizes the significance of safeguarding this pivotal chapter in the history of our country. The City of Springfield expresses appreciation to the Biden Administration for this designation and for demonstrating a strong commitment to civil rights and the preservation of Black history. Their engagement with the Springfield community during the public meeting on June 10th played a crucial role in gathering community feedback and advancing our petition.

The City of Springfield also recognizes Chair Brenda Mallory, Assistant Secretary Shannon Estenoz, and the Department of the Interior for their meticulous consideration of our appeal to designate the Springfield 1908 Race Riot site as a National Monument under the Antiquities Act. The outstanding partnership with the National Park Service and the bipartisan Congressional leadership from Illinois' delegation, including US Senators Dick Durbin, and Tammy Duckworth, State Senator Doris Turner, and US State Representative Nikki Budzinski, has been invaluable in bringing this project to fruition.

This designation culminates a decade-long endeavor by the City of Springfield, the Springfield Branch NAACP, HSHS St. John's Hospital, Hanson Professional Services, and a multitude of local stakeholders dedicated to safeguarding the remnants of the Black-owned residences destroyed during the race riot.

By telling the stories of the race riot survivors, the courageous work of Ida B. Wells, and the founding of the NAACP, this National Monument will acknowledge an essential chapter in our history. It will also highlight African American leadership and provide significant benefits to the City of Springfield.

Mayor Misty Buscher conveyed her gratitude, emphasizing, "We extend our gratitude to President Biden and Vice President Harris for placing value on civil rights progression and the preservation of Black history. This proclamation not only aids in safeguarding our historical heritage but also facilitates national introspection, creating advancement within our community. The establishment of the 1908 Race Riot National Monument serves as a testament to resilience, leadership, and the importance of addressing our history with transparency and integrity."
