WHAT: Three Southern Illinois University School of Medicine physicians will formally receive endowed chairs at an Investiture Ceremony. WHEN: 5 p.m. Monday, June 29, immediately followed by a reception WHERE: Edgar J. Curtis Memorial Learning Center, 228 W. Miller St., Springfield WHY: An endowed chair is among the highest honors in academic medicine, recognizing the person for whom the chair is named and also the faculty member who holds the chair. The investiture officially marks the endowment. The Memorial Health Foundation partners with the SIU Foundation to administer these three funds. Michael Neumeister, MD, is receiving the J. Roland Folse, MD, Endowed Chair of Surgery. Dr. Neumeister is chair of the Department of Surgery at SIU School of Medicine, the Elvin G. Zook, MD Endowed Chair of Plastic Surgery, and director of both the SIU Microsurgery Research Lab and the Wound Care Center at Memorial Medical Center. Nicole Sommer, MD, is receiving the Elvin G. Zook, MD, Endowed Chair of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Sommer is chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at SIU School of Medicine and residency program director, as well as chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery for Springfield Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sommer is Dr. Zook's daughter. James Waymack, MD, is receiving the David L. Griffen, MD, PhD, Endowed Chair of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Waymack is chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. He is also an alumnus of the school. |
