Facility Serves Walk-Up Passengers Utilizing SMTD Fixed Route Service

Springfield, IL – The Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) opened its new customer service window at the Transfer Center at the Springfield Sangamon County Transportation Center (The HUB) Monday morning. The opening marks the first time customer service representatives have been available to SMTD passengers at the Transfer Center to facilitate bus pass sales, answer questions, and renew certain types of discount passes.

“We are excited to be able to offer this service and the convenience of being able to take care of some of these sales and renewals right here at the Transfer Center,” said SMTD Managing Director Steve Schoeffel. “Passengers can now walk over from the bus bays to the window or a ticket vending machine rather than having to travel to our office location on South 9th Street. We just ask for a little patience as we get settled in and work out unanticipated issues that may arise.”

Among services available at the customer service window are the issuing or renewal of Benefit Access passes authorized by the Illinois Department on Aging, sales of one-day, seven-day and thirty-one-day magnetic strip period passes, and BusTap cards passengers can load set dollar amounts on to draw on without time limits.

Business hours for Customer Service at the Transfer Center are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Ticket vending machines remain on and available after hours, and some passes remain available to be purchased online. Hours at 928 S. 9th Street remain 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM M-F.

Schoeffel points out there is no public parking at all on the site, and vehicles approaching the building in the bus drives will be asked by SMTD staff or law enforcement to leave immediately.

“This facility was built as a transfer facility accommodating fixed route buses and small number of office staff in an employee-only parking area,” he said. “This customer service area and the ticket vending machines are intended to serve walk-up passengers arriving or departing on SMTD fixed route buses – not private vehicles or Access paratransit vehicles. Access paratransit passengers and individuals wishing to drive to obtain any of these services should continue to go to our 928 S. 9th Street office.”
