SPRINGFIELD ART ASSOCIATION DEBUTS PILLSBURY EXHIBIT

Pillsburied: Multiple Resurrections
September 6 -28 in the M. G. Nelson Family Gallery at the Springfield Art Association. An Opening Reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, on Friday, September 6th.
September 4, 2024 (Springfield, IL) - The Springfield Art Association is pleased to announce the exhibition, Pillsburied: Multiple Resurrections, curated by Robert Mazrim. This exhibition, in the M. G. Nelson Family Gallery, features both artifacts from the Pillsbury site along with original works of art inspired by and incorporating pieces from the site.

This show is the third in a series of art exhibits created from and about the ruins of the Pillsbury Mill factory in Springfield. The work includes depictions and interpretations of the abandoned factory, and sculptures and collages created from objects and materials found on site. In most cases, the subject matter focuses on the nature of the ruined built environment as it is today, and also the commercial and social legacies of the factory and its products in this community and in American culture in general. The exhibit also includes artworks rescued from the rubble of the Adams Street fire, where the preceding exhibit was mounted.

The exhibit is an invitational one, featuring the work of numerous area artists who have visited the site for inspiration. Some of the artists include Bernie White Hatcher, Jeff Williams, Mary Ellen Strack, Ruthann Mazrim, Betsy Dollar, Maggie Packman, Morgan Behnke, Kay Demlow, Corrin McWhirter, and familiar Pillsbury Artists Static and Shock. It has been curated by Robert Mazrim, who has been harvesting and exhibiting the aesthetic potential of the Pillsbury brownfield reclamation project for the last year and half. This is art created from the collapse of 20th century industrial America.

The M. G. Nelson Family Gallery is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 3. It is part of the main campus of the Springfield Art Association located at 700 North 4th Street. For more information on this release please contact Betsy Dollar, Executive Director at director@springfieldart.org or 217-523-2631.
