The Springfield Police Department will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, May 11, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, Illinois, celebrating the completion of a new outdoor basketball court sponsored by the Springfield Police Department and funded by the Senator Doris Turner Community Connections Grant.
This court is one of two community basketball courts funded by the grant, with the second court located at 2108 E. Laurel Street in partnership with The Outlet. These projects were created to provide safe, positive spaces for youth and families to gather, build relationships, and stay active within their neighborhoods.
The Springfield Police Department believes these courts will have a lasting impact on the community by creating opportunities for mentorship, teamwork, recreation, and positive engagement between officers and the residents they serve. Investments like these help strengthen neighborhoods while giving young people a place where they can connect, grow, and thrive.
“These courts are about more than basketball,” said Springfield Police Chief Joseph Behl. “They represent our commitment to building lasting community connections and creating spaces where relationships can grow between our officers, youth, and families. We are proud to partner with organizations that continue to make a positive difference in our community.”
Community members, local leaders, and media are invited to attend the ceremony and celebrate this important investment in Springfield’s youth and neighborhoods.
