Safe medication disposal shouldn’t have an expiration date. That’s why HSHS St. John’s Community Pharmacy accepts unused or expired prescription drugs year-round.

As the fall National Prescription Drug Take Back Day approaches on Saturday, Oct. 25, pharmacy manager Natalie Howes reminds residents to bring in their old medications.

“Our goal is to be more than a pharmacy – we are your health care partner,” said Howes, PharmD, Outpatient Pharmacy Manager, HSHS St. John’s Hospital. “Flushing or throwing away old pills can contaminate waterways, but with year-round take-back services, we can help preserve our planet and keep our families safe from prescription drug misuse.”

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) annually sets two days as prescription drug take-back days, usually in April and October. The federal agency also has designated HSHS St. John’s Community Pharmacy as a year-round drop-off site for residents’ convenience.

Since launching the twice-a-year program in 2010, the DEA has overseen the collection of more than 9,900 tons of prescription drugs, with 310 tons dropped off at nearly 4,600 sites across the country in April 2025.

HSHS St. John’s Community Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans and offers a wide variety of over-the-counter medications and vitamins. The pharmacy is located at 400 N. 9th St., Suite 1500, Springfield, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
