The University of Illinois Springfield Performing Arts Center (UIS PAC) is excited to announce the launch of Backstage 101, a 2025–2026 learning collaborative designed for anyone interested in exploring the backstage and technical aspects of theater and live performance.

Whether you’re a teacher managing technical responsibilities at your school, a high school student curious about stagecraft, or a community member eager to expand your skills, Backstage 101 offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn directly from local professionals.

The program kicks off in October 2025 with a two-hour orientation, followed by a series of evening and weekend sessions running through April 2026. Participants are required to attend orientation and at least six sessions to complete the program, though they are welcome to attend all.

Program highlights include:

  • Hands-on training in sound, lighting, set construction, props, costumes, and stage management
  • Instruction in industry standards and best practices to raise the quality and safety of productions
  • Guidance from UIS PAC experts and guest professionals from the live event community
  • Networking and collaboration with local artists, educators, and industry leaders
“This program is designed to strengthen our entire arts community by equipping participants with real-world technical skills,” said Carly Shank, UIS PAC Local Arts & Arts Education Program Director. “We’re thrilled to create a space where students, teachers, and community members can come together to learn and grow.”

Thanks to generous donor support, the cost is just $95 for the full year. Fee support is available to ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation.

Registration is now open at https://go.uis.edu/Backstage101. Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
