Sertoma Club of Springfield Gives Illinois Symphony Orchestra Funds for Sound Shields

The Sertoma Club of Springfield Illinois presented the Illinois Symphony Orchestra (ISO) with a donation of $3,000 to purchase sound shields to preserve ISO performers' hearing. Symphonic music is characterized by a wide frequency content and highly variable sound levels including high peak levels. In many situations, the sound levels pose a hearing risk for musicians. Research shows that musicians need some form of acoustic control to reduce sound exposure and possible hearing loss. Sound shields are recommended to address this problem. Acoustic shields are devices used for controlling sound energy reaching musicians seated in front of loud (mostly brass) instruments. They consist of plastic plates, mounted on a pole and located at the head level of the musician to be protected.

The Symphony Orchestra approached Sertoma, whose mission includes protecting people from hearing loss, for funds to purchase several sound shields. Sertoma rose to the call, providing funds for twelve acoustic shields. The shields were purchased and used in the ISO's concluding 2025 concert on May 2nd, "Passion and Pulse." ISO Executive Director Trevor Orthmann recognized the importance of Sertoma's contribution before the performance. Many Sertoma members were present at the concert, enjoying the concert and happy to be able to meet the need for hearing protection among musicians in the community.###
